AI Agents

From concepts to practical implementation

AI agents can retrieve, recommend, act and coordinate. The harder questions are where they create value, how much authority they should have, and what keeps them safe.

The Agent Value & Maturity Framework

Three questions every agent proposal has to answer: why it is worth doing, how far it should go, and how it is kept safe.

Five stages of agent maturity

The five stages of agent maturity
StageWhat the AI does
1. ASSISTAI helps humans retrieve, search, summarise and draft.
2. ADVISEAI analyses, predicts, recommends and prioritises; the human decides.
3. ACTAI executes approved actions within defined authority and exceptions.
4. ORCHESTRATEAI coordinates an end-to-end workflow, tools and specialised agents, with escalation.
5. AUTONOMOUSAI manages a bounded process under governance and human oversight.

Autonomous is not automatically the target state. The right level of autonomy depends on value, risk, regulation and accountability.
