Your AI agent can be hacked without anyone touching your systems

Banks and companies are now building AI agents to work as co-workers. Some will soon do a full job: reading emails, processing documents, dealing with customers and suppliers.

Here is the question I am asking: what happens when someone builds an agent designed to mislead yours?

This is not science fiction. An AI agent reads content and acts on it. If an email, a web page or a document contains hidden instructions, the agent may follow them. It cannot always tell the difference between information to read and orders to obey. This is called prompt injection, and there is no complete technical fix for it today.

The risk grows when agents talk to other agents. An agent posing as a supplier or a customer can feed yours false information. A compromised tool or data source can do the same. If your agent has memory, one planted "fact" can shape its decisions for weeks.

The real danger is a combination of three things:

  1. The agent can see private data.
  2. The agent reads content from outside.
  3. The agent can act or send information out.

An agent with all three is a target. Remove any one and the risk falls sharply.

So how do we protect ourselves? In my three decades in banking technology, the answer to new risk was rarely a new tool. It was discipline.

→ Give each agent only the access its job needs.

→ Keep a human approval for anything that matters: payments, customer data, changes to records.

→ Treat everything the agent reads from outside as data, never as instructions.

→ Log every action, so a wrong step can be found and reversed.

→ Attack your own agent before someone else does.

My rule is simple. Assume your agent will be misled one day. Then make sure that when it happens, the damage is small and you can see exactly what it did.

We learned to trust automation step by step. AI Agents deserve the same patience.

How is You or your organization preparing for this?
