AI Agents
Agent Maturity Path
From ASSIST to AUTONOMOUS, and why autonomy is not automatically the goal.
The five stages
| Stage | What the AI does |
|---|---|
| 1. ASSIST | AI helps humans retrieve, search, summarise and draft. |
| 2. ADVISE | AI analyses, predicts, recommends and prioritises; the human decides. |
| 3. ACT | AI executes approved actions within defined authority and exceptions. |
| 4. ORCHESTRATE | AI coordinates an end-to-end workflow, tools and specialised agents, with escalation. |
| 5. AUTONOMOUS | AI manages a bounded process under governance and human oversight. |
Autonomous is not automatically the target state. The right level of autonomy depends on value, risk, regulation and accountability.
