China’s virtual AI hospital, Agent Hospital, is a remarkable breakthrough in healthcare technology. Created by researchers at Tsinghua University’s Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR), this revolutionary platform aims to replicate actual clinical workflows, empowering AI doctors to consistently enhance their diagnostic and treatment abilities.
The virtual hospital functions using an advanced AI system that empowers virtual doctors to perform online consultations, make diagnoses based on patient-reported symptoms, and suggest treatment plans, which may include medication and lifestyle recommendations. Through natural language processing, these AI doctors can engage effectively with patients, ensuring that communication is clear and accurate. Virtual nurses are also on hand to educate patients, send medication reminders, and provide support for managing chronic diseases. By integrating with wearable devices, remote monitoring of vital signs is possible, enhancing patient care.
The Tongji University School of Medicine undertook a project to develop a model called MedGo. The team successfully integrated and utilized this model, and trained on 6,000 medical textbooks, at the affiliated Shanghai East Hospital.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences, which is one of China’s national research centers and has a strong focus on AI, introduced the CARES Copilot chatbot. This chatbot is based on Meta’s Llama 2 LLM and is designed to assist doctors in making medical diagnoses and treatments.
China's AI hospitals will transform medicine across the world. But not in the United States.

They invested significantly in developing this virtual hospital, although the specific financial details remain undisclosed. The AI solutions used in this virtual hospital are based on large language models (LLMs), which enable virtual doctors, nurses, and patients to interact autonomously. These models are trained on extensive datasets that include medical literature, clinical guidelines, and patient records, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of different medical conditions and treatments.
In the future, the virtual hospital has set its sights on becoming a self-improving system. It aims to enhance its diagnostic accuracy and treatment efficacy using machine learning algorithms. There are plans in place to expand its services and incorporate more advanced AI technologies.
New initiatives are emerging globally. One such example is Babylon Health in the United Kingdom, which combines an AI-powered platform with virtual clinical appointments. This enables patients to consult with healthcare professionals through web and mobile applications. In Spain, the Hospital Universitario de Getafe has introduced a virtual assistant called Lola. Lola monitors prostate cancer patients by making automated phone calls to collect health data and assist with early intervention.
Researchers have proposed a design method called MedAgent-Zero for the virtual hospital concept. This method enables AI doctors to learn, improve, and become accurate in performing clinical tasks continuously. They achieve this by interacting with patients, reviewing medical literature, and accumulating experience in handling both successful and unsuccessful cases. hod enables AI doctors to learn, improve, and become accurate in performing clinical tasks continuously.
According to their research findings, AI doctors could achieve an accuracy of 88% in examining patients, 95.6% in diagnosing patients, and 77.6% in treating patients through this innovative method.
“The doctor agent can complete the diagnosis and treatment of tens of thousands of patients within a few days, which would typically take at least two years for a human doctor,” the researchers also noted.
In the meantime, an AI doctor showed an impressive 93% accuracy when answering a specific portion of the MedQA dataset. This subset primarily focused on questions related to major respiratory diseases, drawing from the comprehensive United States Medical Licensing Examination.
Researchers are developing the concept further. They aim to increase the range of diseases covered and expand to more medical departments. The virtual platform already reached 42 AI doctors in 21 medical departments, such as emergency, respiratory, and cardiology.
In addition, they have plans to incorporate a range of new features. These include promotions for medical positions, tracking changes in disease distribution over time, as well as maintaining historical patient medical records.
